Preparing for important events with hypnotherapy

There are times in our lives when we face events that can cause us a great deal of worry and anxiety. Often we see these events as a stepping stone to a new way of life; an interview, exam or a driving test for instance. We may have invested a great deal of time and money into the process already. This leads us to putting pressure on ourselves to get a good result. At other times we want to do our best to support other members of our family; for example in giving a speech at a wedding. Sometimes we have avoided a situation (such as visiting the dentist) for years and may have picked up on this worry from our family as a child.

Anxiety over specific events can lead to excessive worrying, perfectionism and sleepless nights. We can return to the same negative thoughts and ruminations again and again. It becomes hard to know how to break the pattern and gain perspective. This is where hypnotherapy can help.

Hypnotherapy can help you to calm down and gain perspective

Clients have described feeling ‘overwhelmed,’ ‘overloaded’ or ‘stuck.’ When we are in this frame of mind it is very hard, if not impossible, to look at our lives rationally. We fall into the trap of black and white thinking. A client may feel that if they fail their exams it will be the end of the world. The reality may be that retakes are quite possible but the client may not be able to recognise or accept this in their current thinking. They feel stuck in the same thought patterns around the event that is causing the worry. This pattern may have been going on for years.

Hypnotherapy can take you away from these thoughts, helping you to relax and supporting you to gain perspective. Under hypnosis you become more receptive to positive ideas, helping you to see other ways of thinking. This in itself helps you move forward with your concerns.

Hypnotherapy can support you to reframe events so you view them more positively

A reframe involves talking to you prior to the session to gain lots of information about the event you are concerned about so I can build up a very accurate picture. I then write this up into a unique, personalised script so under hypnosis you can visualise yourself experiencing the event in a positive, realistic, successful way. This imprint can then give you confidence and a new way of seeing the event that you face.

Reframing is a powerful technique that I also use when supporting people with phobias.

How many sessions will I need if I am looking for support to help me with a specific event such as public speaking, visiting the dentist, an exam, interview or driving test?

This really depends on you and how stressed you are in general and around the specific event. If somebody feels happy and in control with most aspects of their life but is worried about giving a speech at their child’s wedding (for example) I would probably recommend one general session followed by a reframe session. In certain instances I may just do a reframe session. However if it is an anxiety you have had for a long time which is impacting on your life in a number of ways I may recommend a number of sessions to work on your stress levels before we carry out a reframe session, for maximum benefit.

The number of sessions you may need, along with any other questions, are discussed in the initial consultation. Please contact me for further details.

Google review from a client who had hypnotherapy for a driving test

‘Elizabeth is an extremely skilled, compassionate and emphathetic hypnotherapist. She explains the neurological processes at work very clearly so as to demystify the whole process and establish trust. She takes time to listen carefully and writes vivid, personalised visualisations. Her voice is calming and reassuring and the whole process left me feeling empowered to handle a stressful situation (my driving test) much more confidently - and in fact to face future situations in the same way. I would highly recommend Elizabeth to anyone facing similar difficulties and challenges.’

Feedback from a client who had hypnotherapy for an interview

‘I just wanted to let you know that I smashed my interview and felt a lot calmer than I ever would have imagined. Thank you so much for your help.’
